The Albanian government is expected to hold a session on July 30, where the focus will be on a last-minute agreement with the United States of America for the purchase of military equipment worth around 300 million euros.
Sources told VoxNews that this purchase aims to increase Albania’s defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product, in line with the objective set by NATO for member countries.
Reaching this threshold is seen as an important step to avoid any reservations that could affect the organization of the NATO summit in Tirana.
Previously, the US administration and President Donald Trump had expressed reservations about the fact that Albania was spending about 1.6% of GDP on defense, below the Alliance’s target.
If the agreement is finalized, Albania will fulfill its financial commitment to NATO, while simultaneously strengthening strategic cooperation with the United States in the field of defense.
