The European Union has approved a new package of reforms for air travel, strengthening passenger rights and changing rules on reservations, compensation and handling of claims against airlines.
The new rules, adopted by the European Council after approval by the European Parliament, are expected to enter into force in mid-2027 and will apply to flights departing from EU airports, as well as to flights to EU countries when operated by European airlines.
One of the main changes concerns seating on the plane. Children under the age of 14 will have the right to sit next to their parents without paying extra for a seat reservation. The same right will also apply to pregnant women and people with limited mobility, who will be able to travel next to their companions without additional fees.
Under the new rules, airlines will have to correct passenger name errors on tickets free of charge. Airlines and booking platforms will also be required to display the total price of the ticket, including hand luggage, so that travelers can more easily compare offers.
Another important change is that passengers who do not use the first flight of a round-trip ticket will no longer automatically lose the right to use the return flight.
For delays and cancellations, the basic rules for compensation remain in force. Passengers will continue to receive compensation when the delay is at least three hours and when the airline is responsible. However, airlines will not be liable for delays or cancellations caused by extraordinary circumstances such as bad weather, natural disasters, disruptive passengers or airport staff strikes.
The reforms also aim to simplify the procedures for compensation claims. Passengers will receive written information about their rights within 96 hours of the end of their trip and will have 9 months to file a claim. Airlines will have to pay compensation or provide a reasoned response within 30 days.
In cases where the trip is interrupted, passengers will be entitled to food and drinks depending on the waiting time, as well as free hotel accommodation and transportation when necessary.
